USGS aerial photo. Taken January 11, 2002 of the Kamoamoa location (just 8 days prior to one of my visits).

Scene at Kamoamoa when I arrive, late afternoon on January 19, 2002. Steam races downwind and offshore.

Kamoamoa entry point just before dark. Hot, fresh lava in foreground.
The start of a new lava flow appears, cloaked in steam.

Lava pushes through existing flows, forming new 'toes'.
Steam rises as lava pushes to sea in the late afternoon.
Lava flow increases, sea flashes to steam.  Higher up, plates growing and creaking as they cool.
A large (1 meter) break through.
New pahoehoe lava streams out, cooling surface 'skin' creating familiar ropy texture.
Twin streams of lava flow into the ocean.
Night starts to fall as the lava continues to flow.
Wide-angle view of the Kamoamoa area just as night falls.
More breakouts occur. Close-up as the flow moves to the sea.
Late night : the steam and lava roar over Kamoamoa.
A new eruption appears atop cracks in older flows.
Flows grow and head towards sea; steam flashes at right.
Recent additions to Hawaii burn on into the night.

Pre-dawn scenes from shoreline.
