Select photographs and a few notes taken during recent visits to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP), on the Big Island of Hawaii, appear on these pages.

HVNP features an amazing range of climates, wildlife, and 'otherworldly' landscapes.

During both visits, hot lava entering the sea could be seen by hiking from the end of Chain-of-craters Road. The lava's sea entry at Kamoamoa, in January 2002, was particularly dramatic.

From desert to lush rainforest, to snow-covered mountain slopes and tropical seacoast, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has them all.

The portion of HVNP visited on this trip lies within the shaded box on the map at right.

Visitors arriving by air can drive from Hilo (45 min.) on the east, or Kona (several hours) on the west.

The park contains hundreds of square km of wilderness area and protected land.

Check with NPS staff for park details.

Volcano House in the park

Volcano House lodge main building
Volcano House is the sole concessionaire within park boundaries and provided excellent accommodation and food.

Rooms are in the main building and (less expensive) in a secluded building nearby surrounded by gardens.

The views from the dining room are fabulous.
