LETTERS AND JOURNAL
TO HIS FIANCÉE HELEN MARKHAM

IN
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

(With the addition of a few letters to his family in Berkeley, California)

by CHARLES PALACHE

Some notes on the typing:

() are C.P.'s

[] are mine

C.P.'s use of punctuation and his spelling are inconsistent.  He tends to divide words when writing, e.g., good night or drift wood, and it's hard to tell when he means to write two words or one.  Many of the names, especially Indian names, are hard to read and are not all on my map, so they may be misspelled.  C.P. seems to write Kadiak throughout but I've changed it to Kodiak.  Other names are spelled differently in different places.  I have occasionally added periods and commas but only when it seemed important to the sense.

For a brief explanation of the origin of the expedition, see on page 57 C.P.'s first letter to his family in Berkeley.  I have added a few of these to the letters he wrote my grandmother, Helen Markham.  Others to his family are much like the letters to her, and they are not many in any case.
